2013 U.S. Open Essay “Snakes” ~ William Nack

This essay, produced and edited by Tim Horgan, aired during the 113th U.S. Open on ESPN.  Lee Trevino was known as a bit of a comedian on the golf course. At the 1971 U.S. Open at Merion, Trevino decided to release the tension of his 18-hole playoff with Nicklaus by tossing a toy snake, left in his golf bag by his daughter, at Nicklaus. Nicklaus got a kick out of it and Trevino shot a 68 to defeat him by three strokes.
